International Dotzauer Competition for young cellists
From 13th to 20th October 2019 the 7th International Dotzauer Competition for young cellists took place at the Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik “Carl Maria von Weber” Dresden. Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) worked as principal cellist of the Dresdner Hofkapelle from 1811 until his death. The comprehensive works of this composer and instrumentalist are part of the obligatory literature every cellist is supposed to deal with.
Carried out first in 1998, the competition has been being announced every four years since 2001 and every three years since 2016. It is a musical platform for children and young people of four age categories up to 20 years. Being held under the artistic direction of cellist Professor Gunda Altmann, it meets with great international response.
In 2019, 77 young musicians from 12 countries participated in the seventh round of the competition. They came from Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, South Korea and Singapore.
The competition is funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Education and the Arts, it is supported by the Hochschule für Musik Dresden, the Freundeskreis des Sächsischen Landesgymnasiums für Musik Dresden e. V. and other sponsors. The buildings of the Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik in Dresden-Blasewitz function as venues for the competition.
The Prize Winners Concert played in the assembly hall of the Landesgymnasium on Sunday, 20th October 2019, represented the final highlight of this cello competition.
