Admission procedure
Registration for the 2024/2025 school year is complete
Applications will not be possible again until the 2025/26 school year. The dates of the aptitude tests will then be published on our website. Until then, we wish everyone who is interested in studying at the Landesmusikgymnasium a good time - and we look forward to welcoming you to our concerts!
Particular conditions, that are in line with the rules for specialized schools, apply for the admission to the Landesmusikgymnasium.
Students will apply in an entrance exam that takes instrumental skills, general musicality and the performance at school into consideration. The places available will be allocated depending on the instrument, the class level and capacity of the boarding school. Students may start at every class level up to year 11.
Notes for year 4 students (entry for school year 2020/21)
Applicants have to present the original Bildungsempfehlung (recommendation of primary school for further education) on the date of the entrance exam. Provided that an admission will not take place, they will get back the original until 18th March, 2020 and may apply at a different Gymnasium (secondary school) until 2nd April, 2020. The receiving Gymnasium will treat the students in the same way as those who handed in their Bildungsempfehlung on the first date.
A musical and technical level of development appropriate to the age of the child will be expected. Besides the auditions, a short trial lesson may take place. Please see the specific requirements for the individual instruments.
The interview helps to get to know each other. It is supposed to provide an insight into the young person’s motivation, their personal development so far and their possible perspectives. Both the applicants and their parents may ask questions about the school and the (musical) education.
The aptitude for secondary schools is proven by presenting the last school reports. The general rules for the attendance of a Gymnasium apply (cf. Schulordnung Gymnasium und Abitur, SOGYA).
The test comprises hearing, vocal skills, rhythmic understanding and basic music theory. Testing the knowledge of music theory mainly serves to later form homogenous learning groups in music theory.
Practice recommendations for admission to year 5:
- imitating (singing/playing), single tones / pairs of tones / tone sequences

-
hearing differences:

- melody lines
- competence in using the staff
- identifying the level of semi-tones
- quick recognition of names of notes with and without key signatures
