Requirements for auditions

Young violinists with sound previous knowledge on their instrument are very welcome for admission to year 5. Students may start later at any class level up to year 11.

For the auditions, we kindly ask you to prepare:

  • scale through three octaves with different techniques
  • sequence of chords
  • étude
  • two recital pieces of different character

The programme is to be performed from memory.

The level of difficulty should correspond to the student’s performance level. As a general rule, there will be a trial lesson with the respective music teacher during the entrance exam.

A list of musical pieces acquired in the last two years should be added to the application. If you require a piano accompaniment, please hand in the sheet music three weeks before the exam date at the latest.

Cellists with sound previous knowledge on their instrument are very welcome for admission to year 5 up to year 11.

Preparation for the entrance exam:

  • scale with different techniques
  • triads, possibly scales of thirds
  • étude
  • two recital pieces of different styles and character

The programme is to be performed from memory if possible.

The level of difficulty should correspond to the student’s performance level.

As a general rule, there will be a trial lesson with the respective music teacher during the entrance exam. A list of musical pieces acquired in the last twelve months should be added to the application.

Please hand in the audition programme three weeks in advance and please let us know if you require a piano accompaniment.

For the auditions, we kindly ask you to prepare:

  • scale of 1-2 octaves with different techniques
  • triads, possibly scales of thirds
  • étude
  • one recital piece

Applicants for upper years present themselves with a programme of an appropriate level of difficulty.

A musical education on the double bass is thinkable if the applicant shows great musical talent, physiological aptitude and good performance on a different instrument.

We welcome young musicians with sound knowledge on the recorder, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and classical saxophone for admission to year 5 up to year 11.

For the auditions, we kindly ask you to prepare:

  • scales and triads
  • étude
  • two recital pieces of different character, amongst them a slow movement

The level of difficulty should correspond to the student’s performance level. Applicants for the main subject recorder should perform on both the soprano and the alto recorder starting from year 7 onwards. As a general rule, there will be a trial lesson with the respective music teacher during the entrance exam. A list of musical pieces acquired in the last twelve months is kindly requested.

In exceptional cases, the musical education on the oboe or bassoon may be taken up from the beginning, if the physiological aptitude applies. Precondition: Good performance on a different instrument and a free place in the department.

Young musicians with sound knowledge of their instrument will be admitted to year 5 (trumpet, French horn, trombone) or to upper years (tuba). A fully developed second teeth position (essential: incisors and molars) is an anatomical precondition.

Information about orthodontic treatments (loose or fixed braces, overbite etc.) have to be added to the application.

Very talented students of years 5 to 8 may directly start their musical education on a brass instrument at the Landesmusikgymnasium, given the anatomical preconditions.

For the auditions, students have to perform on their brass, but also on a different instrument (e.g. piano, recorder, accordion).

For the auditions, we kindly ask you to prepare:

  • scale and triad in the range available
  • étude
  • a recital piece or concert (one or two movements)

The level of difficulty should correspond to the student’s performance level, but has to comply with the standards of the Landesmusikgymnasium for applicants from year 10 onwards. A list of musical pieces acquired in the last twelve months should be added to the application. As a general rule, there will be a trial lesson with the respective music teacher during the entrance exam.

Auditon programme:

  • exercises on scale and chords
  • 1 étude
  • 2 recital pieces of different character

Piano skills are desirable.

We also welcome students who have only played the hook harp until now. Please bring along your hook harp.

Lessons will be taught according to the chosen musical style (classic or jazz/rock/pop), but will always include the other style, too.

Good to very good performance in school is desirable, since the demands on all the percussion instruments will take up a lot of time for practice.

If the applicant has sound previous knowledge on a different instrument, but shows great musical talent and a physiological aptitude, he/she may already start their drums education at the lower class levels.

Preconditions:

  • manual skills without restrictions
  • imagination and feeling for sound
  • sense of rhythm and hearing (imitating rhythmical figures, singing of given melodies)

Applicants present themselves with a self-chosen programme that complies with the level of difficulty of the students’ age group.

The Landesmusikgymnasium disposes of a wide range of instruments.

We welcome young pianists with sound previous knowledge on their instrument. Admission up to year 11 is possible.

3. from the time of around 1830- present (Schumann, Kabalewski ...)

The student will first present a self-chosen solo work and the étude from memory. The board of examiners will then choose further parts of the prepared programme. Finally, some students will be asked to join a trial lesson.
