Age categories - competition program
Altersgruppen / Age categories
All young pianists up to the age of 23 are invited to participate. The Competition is divided into four age categories:
Category I (up to 12 years)
Competitors born after April 06, 2008
Category II (13-14 years)
Competitors born after April 06, 2006
Category III (15-17 years)
Competitors born after April 06, 2003
Category IV (18-23 years)
Competitors born after April 06, 1997
Competition programme
All works must be played from memory.
Competitors may perform their programme with or without repeats, as long as the total length of the programme remains within the prescribed playing time. The jury reserves the right to stop the competitor if the performance exceeds the time limit.
Category I (10-15 minutes)
• A selection of works by Carl Maria von Weber:
6 Fughettas op. 1 or 12 Allemandes op. 4 or 6 Ecossaises WoO or Max-Waltz op. 81 posth. or Waltz J. 185 or Works by Carl Maria von Weber in the Category II
• A virtuoso etude by Czerny op. 849 or op. 299, Berens op.88, Loeschhorn op. 66 or op. 52, Bertini op. 29/32, Burgmueller op. 100 or op. 109, Cramer op. 50, Moszkowski op. 91 or more difficult
• The first movement of the sonata or sonatina (sonata-allegro movement) by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
• One or more works from the remaining style epochs from baroque up to the present
Category II (20-30 minutes)
• A selection of works by Carl Maria von Weber:
6 Fughettas op.1 or 6 Variations on an Original Theme op. 2 or 12 Allemandes op. 4 or 8 Variations on a theme from Vogler’s Castor and Pollux op. 5 or Momento capriccioso op. 12 or Grande polonaise op. 21 or 6 Ecossaises WoO or Six Favourite Waltzes J. 143-148 or Moment capriccioso Op. 12 or Les Adieux Fantasie Op. 81 or Works by Carl Maria von Weber in the Category III or IV
• A virtuoso etude by Czerny op. 299 or op. 335, Heller op. 45, Burgmueller op. 105 or op. 109, Berens op. 62, Loeschhorn op. 38 or Liszt or Moszkowsky or Chopin or Debussy or Rachmaninov or comparable
• The first movement of the sonata (sonata-allegro movement) by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
• One or more works from the remaining style epochs from baroque up to the present
Category III (30-40 minutes)
• A selection of works by Carl Maria von Weber:
6 Variations on an Original Theme op. 2 or
7 Variations on "Vien quà, Dorina bella" op. 7 or Grande polonaise op. 21 or 7 Variations on “A peine au sortir de l’enfance” op. 28 or 7 Variations on a Gipsy Song op. 55 or Rondo brillante op. 62 or Invitation to the Dance op. 65 or Polacca brillante op. 72 or Moment capriccioso Op. 12 or Works by Carl Maria von Weber in the Category IV
• A virtuoso etude by Moszkowsky op. 72, Czerny op. 740, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Scriabin or comparable
• The first movement of the sonata (sonata-allegro movement) by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
• One or more works from the remaining style epochs from baroque up to the present
Category IV
1st Round (15-20 minutes)
• J. S. Bach: One Prelude and Fugue from the”Well-Tempered Clavier” Book I or II
• A virtuoso Etude by Chopin, Liszt (excluding Études pour le piano en douze exercices), Bartok, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Ligeti or comparable
• A selection of works by Carl Maria von Weber:
6 Variations sur l'air de Naga de 'Samori' op.6 or 7 Variations on "Vien quà, Dorina bella" op. 7 or 7 Variations on an Original Theme op. 9 or Grande polonaise op. 21 or Piano Sonata No. 1 in C major op. 24 or 7 Variations on “A peine au sortir de l’enfance” op. 28 or 9 Variations op. 40 or Piano Sonata No. 2 in A flat major op. 39 or Piano Sonata No. 3 in D minor op. 49 or 7 Variations on a Gipsy Song op. 55 or Rondo brillante op. 62 or Invitation to the Dance op. 65 or Polacca brillante op. 72 or Piano Sonata No. 4 in E minor op. 70 (single movements of the sonatas are admitted)
2nd Round (30-40 minutes)
• A sonata or the first movement of the sonata (one sonata-allegro movement) by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven (excluding op. 49) or Schubert
• One or more works or single movements from the Baroque period up to the present
3rd Round - Final Round
One of the following piano concertos has to be prepared for the final with the Hochschulsinfonieorchester conducted by Prof. Ekkehard Klemm:
• Carl Maria von Weber: Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major , Op. 11
• Carl Maria von Weber: Piano Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 32
• Carl Maria von Weber: Konzertstück (Concert Piece) in F minor, J.282, Op. 79
• Robert Schumann: Piano concerto in A minor, Op. 54
